Fifty years of wise port decisions in Karlshamn

Way back in the 1960s, politicians in Karlshamn made the decision to move port operations out from the city centre and build a brand new port. This was a farsighted, wise and bold decision, and it paved the way for the fabulous conditions we now have in Karlshamn. Since this time, a lot of other wise decisions have been made to realize this vision of Karlshamn as a significant logistics node on the Baltic Sea.

A lot is happening right now. The large start-up area adjacent to the port, which now stands ready, is an important major step for the future. Another vital step is the construction of an intermodal terminal and rail yard. And the port’s investment in container handling is yet another example.

But it’s not only hardware that’s being built in Karlshamn. I was impressed by the purposefulness and depth of the logistics focus in Karlshamn right from my first contact with the city. And as I’ve got more deeply involved with operations here, I have become even more impressed! There is a unique platform for logistics and logistics development here. In addition to various logistics companies, the port, and so on, Karlshamn also has networks, education and research in logistics through NetPort Karlshamn, the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) and others.

All forecasts show strong growth in the goods flow to the east. The Swedish Transport Administration is talking about a 100% increase by 2050. It is very difficult to make prognoses. Development is dependent on so many different factors. But if you consider the potential in population and growth in markets to the east such as Russia, the Ukraine and a number of other countries all the way to China, you realize Karlshamn’s key location for trade flows between Sweden and the Nordic countries and these emerging markets.

Here at the Port of Karlshamn, we’re continuing to forge ahead along this beaten track.

Mats Olsson

CEO, Port of Karlshamn
