Karlshamn has always been a port

Our history

Our history

Karlshamn was established as a city because of the excellent conditions for a port. After the peace treaty with Denmark in 1658, the Region of Blekinge and Karlshamn became Swedish. At that time Karlshamn was a farmer port. Karl X Gustav, the King of Sweden was in need of an important port for export. Bodekull had a sheltered location and natural water depth why Karlshamn (Karls Port) got city rights and its new name in 1664. With improved infrastructure the port was growing with a peak during the Napolean blockade 1808-1812. Later on continued investments took place enabling the market position of Karlshamn in modern time.
